Obituary obtained from the Chester-Shade Historical Association, Meigs County, Ohio Bedford Lodi Collection, page E10 John Erwin was born near Paris, Pendleton County, Kentucky, April 15th, 1805, and died at his residence in Bedford township, Meigs, Ohio, July 23, 1891, aged 86 years, 3-months and 8 days. At the age of about eighteen months he emigrated with his father, Samuel Erwin, to Meigs County, Ohio, and settled where is now Horton's lumber yard in Pomeroy, and lived there a number of years, being the first family that lived in Pomeroy, or at least the upper portion of it, and has remained a citizen of the county ever since. He was married to Nancy Saxton December 16, 1825, who died July 9, 1837, who bore him six children. He was married the second time to Elizabeth Will, September 3, 1837, who died April 9, 1869, by whom he had ten children. He was married the third time to Mrs. Caroline B. Smith, August 5, 1869, who died March 15, 1889. He was the father of sixteen children, eight of whom still survive, and are all married. He joined the United Brethren Church in 1843, and lived a consistent member of said Church for nearly forty-eight years contributed freely of his influence and means to build up the church of his choice, and died with a full hope of a blissful life to come. He was interred in the Mt. Herman cemetery July 25th, in the presence of a large concourse of people. Rev. M. Will preached the funeral sermon. J.B. RICE.
