I am beginning research on thiis maternal great-grandfather, William Daniel Ervin, c. 1832-1921. I will post his death certificate in a few days, hoping that someone in this group has information about him. I do have his Civil War records, which give the names of two wives and children by each. His death certificate also gives his parents names, i.e., Daniel and Mary ERVIN, both indicated by this certificate that they were born in Waverly, Pike, Ohio. I have also been able to obtain marriage /death records for both of William Daniel's wives. These I will also post later.
As I am very much a 'newbie', and am not certain of protocols here, please do not hesitate to give direction. This is daunting research for me and it's difficult to obtain primary source records, as LDS is not nearby nor a convenient library. So I'm hoping very much that someone on the list can direct me somewhat or give clues as the next steps.

Yes, I would start there and work your way backwards. Your goal then is to try and prove his ancestry to Samuel, right?
Why do you think William might be the son of Samuel when his death record says his father' name was Daniel?
Also, I think the first thing I would do is get a copy of his obituary from the library. Since he died in the 1920's and his wife was still living at the time, you may find a decent write-up for him.
No, not William, she states she believes this line possibly descends from Samuel in her profile. Remember the 1850 census (both the Vinton and Scioto County one) lists a Daniel in the household.
The Daniel in Samuel Sr's household is 16 yrs old in one 1850 census and 17 in the other. This would give him a birth year of 1833, the same one that Ann gives for William Daniel. And I think there is a good possibility that the two are one and the same, since there is no trace of a Daniel Ervin (of the right age) after that census. The only bugs are the death certificate, which gives his birthplace as Chillicothe and his father's bp as Waverly. And then, of course the parents names on the certificate are totally wrong. However, Wm D marries for the first time in Elk, (McArthur) Vinton county at the age of twenty-one. He marries Susannah Robinet, whose father Nathan is in the Athens/Vinton area since at least the 1830 census. Wm then lives in Vinton country for most of his life: 1860, Elk, Vinton, 1870, Elk, Vinton, 1880, Clinton, Vinton, 1900, Clinton, Vinton. His second marriage is in Vinton county also. His second wife's family is living in Milton, Jackson in 1860 the year she (Maggie Kisor) is born. Maggie's family is pretty easily traced, because of unusual names like Julia and Amanda. She also has a pretty good obituary.

Thanks for posting. You stated in your registration that you believe that William may be the son of Samuel? Samuel is my 5th-great grandfather and is buried in Meigs County. I would very much like to see the death certificate. Does it list Samuel? There were several Samuels in southeastern Ohio which caused much confusion for a long time, but we eventually worked it out.
As far as protocols go, there really aren't any. :) We encourage discussion and theorize on what our individual research might suggest. We have a diverse member base; from those who actively research to those who can only do it occasionally as time permits.
Please share the additional information, as we haven't yet matched anyone from the Pike county area.
