Back from OHS and copied both William Lyons and Elizabeth Markins death certificates.

William's lists Jacob Lyon as his father and Granville Lyons as the informant. Mother's Maiden Name has nothing listed at all, just a line drawn through it. Sad

Elizabeth Markins lists Jacob Lyons as father and Mother's Name only lists "Irwin"

Thanks Amy. You know, I've

You know, I've been thinking about Margaret's certificate again and I remembered something Willis Ervin had said to me. He said something about thinking Jane's maiden name may have been Owen. Perphaps Margaret was a granddaughter of Samuel and Jane, the daughter of a son of their's named William, middle name Owen for his mother's maiden name.

Or maybe Margaret really is the daughter of Owen (any chance his first name was William?) and was just staying with her grandparents in the 1850 census. The 1840 cenus shows Owen with 2 females <5yrs and Lydia's the only one I have a name for. I do agree that her statement of her father's birthplace as WV is a problem with this theory.

I worked on the Jane "Owen"

I worked on the Jane "Owen" theory long ago with another historian and we could not come up with anything conclusive. We had always wondered how "Owen" had come about as it really was an unusual name for that family. We even went so far as to look in Owen county Kentucky to see if there was some relation there. No luck.

You probably already know this, but Owen was married twice. Once to Deborah Anderson and the second time to Louisa Scott Thorpe.

His children from his first marriage are Milton, Lydia, Vinton, Sarah, and Henry.

The children from his second marriage are Martha, George, Mary, Lucinda, Harriett, and possibly another child Almira - I'll have to explain this Almira connection in another post Smile

I have marriages for everyone except Henry.

I guess I could go back to the censuses and see if Louisa had noted any deceased children vs. living children to see if I somehow missed one.

Well, actually, if Margaret

Well, actually, if Margaret were Owen's daughter, her mother would have to be Deborah. Margaret is born in 1837 and Owen didn't marry Louisa until 1850. (A new step-mother might be a good reason to visit Grandma and Grandpa that year)

Owen's household in 1840:
Owen Ervin, M: 1<5 yrs, 1 5-9 yrs, 1 20-29 yrs F: 2<5, 1 15-219 yrs, 1 20-29 yrs

Vinton, Milton, and Lydia are all accounted for but there are two females that are not, 1<5 and 1 15-19 yrs. Just wondering if the younger one is Margaret.

Duh! - you're right Margaret

Duh! - you're right Margaret would've had to have been Deborah's. Clearly wasn't thinking when I said that.

I suppose it's not out of the question, especially considering that the kids in that first family were kind of scattered after Deborah died. But, I would think that Deborah's brother Joel, who ended up with Sarah and Henry, would have also taken in any other girls, as the oldest boys were kept by Owen.

Have you seen any of Owen's

Have you seen any of Owen's children's death certificates? Perhaps one of them also lists their father's name as "Wm Owen". That would definitely be a clue.

Here are Owen's children by

Here are Owen's children by Deborah Anderson and their marriages:

Milton Ervin m. Elizabeth Siens (spelled incorrectly in the census as SCIANCE) Apr 6, 1854 Vinton Co.

Lydia Ervin m. Joseph Jenkins Sept 14, 1854 Vinton Co. - (Jenkins died and she remarried to a Benjamin KISOR.)

Vinton Ervin m. Josephine Malissa McCarty Oct 13, 1863 Vinton Co.

Sarah Ervin m. Thomas R. Siens (brother to Elizabeth above) Feb 19, 1860 Vinton Co.

Henry Clinton Ervin ended up in Carterville, Missouri (Jasper County) and I'm not sure who he married. He died Apr 10, 1918 and a copy of his death certificate is in the death cert. area.

Vinton died in 1916 and all

Vinton died in 1916 and all of Owen's children by Louisa died after 1909, the year Ohio death certificates started asking for parents names, so I think that would be a good place to start looking.

Also, there is a Henry Ervin listed in the 1900 Jasper county MO census married to a Sarah E. (I actually thought I got that info from you.)

Yes, Sarah is listed, but I

Yes, Sarah is listed, but I don't know what her maiden name is/was.

Perhaps you could get her

Perhaps you could get her death certificate or that of one of her children and it will list her maiden name. Probably one of the kids' would be more likely to have it.

Well, I just found the death

Well, I just found the death certificate of Sarah E., wife of Henry Clinton Ervin. (Thanks, Amy, for the link to the Missouri death certificates.) She was the daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Brown and was born in Lee county Iowa, 13 Mar 1848 and died in Carterville, Jasper, Missouri 12 Feb 1925. I'll post the image of the death certificate in that forum.

That's what we were looking

That's what we were looking for though; for one of the kids to state that their mother's maiden name was Ervin. Thanks so much for your trouble. I think I will post a visual of their family.
